Rough Draft is a monthly-ish letter on process, craft, and conversations with artists.
I write Rough Draft to share work that’s in progress: new writing, drafts of projects, notes on craft and research, and conversations with artists and friends.
It’s also the best place to be updated on newly published magazine work, projects, readings, etc. before or as it happens.
A little messy and if you reply, I usually write back.
I also wrote a book. Cruising Diaries by the King of Sex (Everything Matters Press), which started out in these letters.
Some past letters:
Cruising and HIV in 2025 – A conversation with three storytellers about depictions of HIV in culture, declaring and disclosing our status, and stigma.
New Orleans, Community and Climate Catastrophe – Notes on Virginia Hanusik’s photographs, New Orleans, and photographing climate catastrophe.
A Piece in Mexico City – A short craft essay on my small part in an artwork shown in Mexico City: on collaboration, Nina Simone, and performance.
On Having a Studio – Notes on having a work studio in Oakland
Gossiping with Beto Pérez – A conversation with an artist and friend about our approaches to nonfiction, HIV, and making art out of a life.
